Fabricación de PCB Panasonic R-1566 para multicapas de línea fina sin halógenos

Panasonic R-1566 PCB for halogen-free fine-line multilayers

Panasonic R-1566 laminate with R-1551 prepreg is a halogen-free glass-epoxy system for multilayer boards that need controlled expansion and a documented environmental-material route. Highleap Electronics manufactures R-1566 PCBs after confirming the exact suffix, copper form, line/space, via structure and compliance scope.

The conversion question is not simply whether the buyer wants “halogen-free FR-4.” The project must define whether the requirement applies to the laminate only, the finished bare PCB or the complete PCBA. Solder mask, ink, adhesive, connector and component declarations can all affect the final compliance statement.

What Highleap needs first: exact Panasonic part number or approved family, layer count, minimum line/space, smallest via, copper type, halogen-free scope, quantity and whether assembly is included.

Control the Exact R-1566 Variant

R-1566 is a family name, not permission to treat every suffix as interchangeable. Panasonic publishes R-1566/R-1551 as a halogen-free multilayer system and also offers variant designations for different copper and process positions. The purchase order and stackup should name the exact approved grade whenever the customer specification depends on a particular construction.

Laminate and prepreg must be matched

R-1566 identifies the cured copper-clad laminate; R-1551 identifies the related bonding prepreg. A multilayer board normally uses both. Substituting another prepreg changes flow, cure, pressed thickness, adhesion and electrical behavior, so any hybrid construction needs written engineering approval.

Published values need the test method

Panasonic lists typical DSC Tg of 148°C, Td of 350°C, Z-axis CTE of 40 ppm/°C below Tg and 180 ppm/°C above Tg, with 1 oz peel strength of 1.8 kN/m for the referenced sample. These typical values support material selection but should not be written into the fabrication drawing as guaranteed finished-board values.

Panasonic classifies R-1566/R-1551 in its halogen-free glass-epoxy multilayer series. The manufacturer’s current product page should be the reference for part identity and typical data.

Translate “Halogen-Free” into a Purchasable Requirement

A buyer may mean one of three things: the base laminate must be halogen-free; the finished bare board materials must meet a customer standard; or the complete assembled product must be supported by supplier declarations. Those are different supply scopes and documentation burdens.

Requested scope Materials that must be considered Evidence to define
Laminate only R-1566 core and R-1551 prepreg Manufacturer declaration or compliance document
Finished bare PCB Laminate, prepreg, solder mask, legend ink, surface finish process materials Material declarations and approved BOM of board materials
Complete PCBA Bare PCB plus components, connectors, cables, adhesives and process materials Supplier declarations at the required product level

Highleap will quote the documentation that is actually requested. A generic “RoHS and halogen-free certificate required” note can be ambiguous because RoHS compliance and halogen-free status are not the same standard. The halogen-free PCB guide explains the difference between laminate selection and finished-product compliance.

Need a compliance-ready quotation rather than a material-only quote?

State whether the requirement covers laminate, bare PCB or PCBA and identify the customer standard or declaration format.

Fine-Line and mSAP-Oriented Design Considerations

Relevant R-1566 variants are positioned for fine-line and mSAP-compatible applications, but the exact process capability must be confirmed for the selected copper construction and factory route. “mSAP-compatible” is not a guarantee that any line/space can be produced at any volume.

Line/space must be connected to copper type

Fine features are affected by starting copper, seed and plating process, etch control, panel uniformity and registration. The RFQ should identify minimum line/space, finished copper and whether the geometry is isolated or repeated across the panel. Highleap will distinguish a conventional subtractive route from a process that requires special copper preparation or mSAP-related controls.

Fine lines do not remove via and thermal risk

Compact boards often combine fine traces with small holes, dense BGAs and multiple reflow cycles. The material’s low expansion can improve plated-hole margin, but drill quality, desmear, copper plating and assembly history remain decisive. For laminación secuencial or laser microvias, use a released HDI construction and review the production-ready HDI stackup guide.

Stackup, Lamination and Hole Reliability

The stackup should identify exact core/prepreg types, glass style, nominal pressed thickness, copper form, target finished thickness and any impedance geometry. On fine-line multilayers, dimensional movement and registration must be accounted for before CAM compensation.

Pressed dielectric thickness controls more than impedance

Dielectric spacing affects impedance, resin flow, total thickness and drilling depth. A thin nominal prepreg does not always press to the catalog thickness because copper percentage and resin flow change the result. Highleap releases a construction based on the real copper pattern rather than a generic stackup image.

CAF and insulation design remain system issues

Halogen-free does not mean automatically CAF-proof or suitable for any creepage/clearance. Conductor spacing, glass/resin interfaces, moisture, bias voltage, cleanliness and hole damage influence insulation reliability. If a formal CAF requirement exists, it must be stated independently from halogen-free compliance.

Manufacturing, Inspection and PCBA

Highleap’s production route may include incoming material control, inner-layer imaging and AOI, controlled lamination, laser or mechanical drilling as approved, desmear, copper plating, fine-line inspection, solder mask, surface finish, routing and 100% electrical test. The inspection level is matched to feature size and product risk.

First-article controls for an R-1566 build

  • Confirm material and suffix against the released stackup
  • Measure critical line/space and registration features
  • Verify finished thickness and controlled impedance where specified
  • Microsection representative holes or microvias when required
  • Review surface finish and solderability for fine-pitch assembly
  • Approve the first PCBA before volume release when assembly is included

For PCBA, Highleap can quote component sourcing, SMT/THT, AOI, X-ray for appropriate packages, programming and functional test when the test method is defined. A halogen-free PCBA declaration requires approved component data; it cannot be inferred from the PCB laminate.

Fine-line quotations need capability context

A minimum line/space number is meaningful only when paired with copper thickness, feature density, panel size and inspection method. A factory may be capable of an isolated fine feature but not achieve the same yield when that geometry repeats across a large panel. Highleap therefore reviews the distribution of fine lines, not just the smallest number in the drawing.

Surface finish and assembly interface

Fine-pitch BGAs, land-grid arrays and small passive components place tighter demands on pad flatness and solder-mask registration. ENIG, ENEPIG or another finish may be considered depending on assembly and wire-bond requirements. The choice should be based on product needs, thickness limits and supplier control rather than assuming one finish is universally best.

Conversion package for a compliance-sensitive buyer

Highleap can structure the quotation in three layers: PCB manufacturing, compliance documentation and PCBA. This lets procurement identify which declarations are included, which must come from component suppliers and which require customer-provided standards. For a new program, the response can include a compliance-gap list so missing mask, component or connector declarations are found before production.

Change control for suffix and material source

The approved part number, suffix and source should be referenced on the purchase order. A change in copper form or prepreg may affect fine-line processing and dimensional movement even when the brand remains Panasonic. Repeat production should require written approval for any construction change that can influence compliance, impedance or registration.

Buyer-focused decision example

If a six-layer wearable product needs halogen-free materials but uses conventional 100/100 μm lines, a less specialized halogen-free FR-4 may be more economical. If the same product uses dense fine-pitch routing, tight thickness and customer-approved Panasonic material, R-1566 becomes easier to justify. The page should help the buyer make that distinction rather than implying that every halogen-free board needs the premium family.

Applications, Alternatives and Quotation

R-1566 is a candidate for compact consumer electronics, industrial controls, network products and other multilayers where halogen-free material control and fine features matter. It should not be selected solely because the product is small; ordinary FR-4 may be more economical when line/space and compliance needs are conventional.

When to compare another family

  • Choose a dedicated high-Tg, low-CTE material when repeated thermal cycling is the dominant risk.
  • Choose a low-loss family when insertion loss and long high-speed channels control the design.
  • Choose an HDI-qualified construction when sequential lamination and microvia reliability are central.
  • Choose a standard halogen-free FR-4 when fine-line capability is not required and cost is the main driver.
