I-Tera MT40 PCB-tillverkningsprocess och verifiering

I-Tera MT40 PCB fabrication process

Highleap Electronics provides Isola I-Tera MT40 PCB fabrication services with the option to coordinate component sourcing, SMT assembly and customer-defined testing in one manufacturing project. For OEM engineers and purchasing teams, the practical value of an I-Tera MT40 prepreg PCB service is a controlled handoff from stack-up approval to fabrication, inspection, documentation and optional PCBA—not simply the ability to buy a low-loss laminate.

This guide follows the service route and identifies what the buyer should approve at each stage. Deliverables such as TDR data, cross-sections, material traceability and RF insertion-loss testing must be specified in the RFQ and accepted quality plan. They should not be assumed as automatically included or technically interchangeable.

Stage 1 — Stack-Up, Material and DFM Review

The first service deliverable should be a manufacturing-ready stack-up, with every controlled electrical and mechanical assumption made explicit. Highleap's PCB DFM engineering review can be used to identify incomplete material notes, incompatible mechanical requirements, impedance targets lacking reference layers, and stack-up uncertainties before production.

Isola I-Tera MT40 is a very-low-loss laminate and prepreg with typical Dk 3.45, Df 0.0031, Tg 215°C (DSC), Enligt Isola’s official product specification. It is described by Isola as FR-4 process compatible, with material properties stable over a broad temperature and frequency range. These data are material references; engineering must still use the appropriate construction-specific dielectric thickness and electrical properties for the actual stack-up.

Agree layer count, total thickness, core constructions, prepreg styles/resin content, copper weights and foil treatment, reference planes, surface finish, via architecture and impedance tolerance. Clarify whether the design requires a dedicated TDR coupon or an RF test structure for insertion loss. For high-frequency laminate selection, the combination of dielectric and copper may matter as much as the brand name.

Buyer approval gate: release the proposed manufacturing stack-up and the list of remaining engineering questions. A stack-up cannot be changed later without considering its effect on impedance, delay, loss, via dimensions and qualification.

Stage 2 — I-Tera MT40 PCB Fabrication and Lamination Controls

Fabrication turns the approved dielectric and copper construction into a physical board with controlled geometry and via integrity. For an I-Tera MT40 program, the manufacturing plan should account for material handling, artwork compensation, lamination sequence, drilling, hole-wall preparation, copper plating, imaging/etching and solder-mask processing.

Drift Teknisk kontroll Potential verification
Materialfrisättning Match approved grade, core/prepreg and foil to the job traveler Material identity and applicable lot evidence
lamine Maintain the qualified process window and expected dielectric geometry Cross-section or approved process records, where specified
Drill and plating Control aspect ratio, hole preparation, copper thickness and via requirements Microsection measurements against the applicable drawing/IPC criteria
Imaging and etch Control line width, copper height and profiles affecting impedance Artwork / process inspection and appropriate coupon checks
Final finish and electrical test Meet finished-board solderability, dimensions and netlist requirements Documented visual and continuity/isolation acceptance

Isola describes the laminate as compatible with FR-4 processing, so it is inaccurate to claim that any FR-4-like process inevitably causes undercure. The correct question is whether the chosen fabrication conditions, including any hybrid bonding layers, are qualified to achieve the released build. Highleap’s multilayer PCB manufacturing workflow provides context for coordination across these stages.

For complex blind/buried vias or sequential lamination, discuss HDI PCB manufacturing constraints alongside the laminate selection. The cost and yield of a specialized multilayer build are not determined by resin data alone.

Stage 3 — Impedance, Inspection and Optional RF Loss Testing

A completed I-Tera MT40 PCB needs acceptance methods matched to the engineering requirement. Bare-board electrical testing checks the netlist for opens and shorts. Dimensional and visual inspection check features specified by the fabrication drawing. Cross-sections can evaluate through-hole plating and dielectric geometry. TDR checks impedance on suitable traces or coupons. None of these automatically measures channel insertion loss.

För controlled-impedance PCB verification, the customer should define nominal values, tolerance, coupon structures, locations, measurement approach, sampling frequency and reporting format. Measured TDR results reflect the combination of actual dielectric, conductor geometry and test structure—not a direct extraction of substrate Dk. Insertion-loss limits require appropriate RF or high-speed S-parameter methods and a frequency-dependent acceptance specification.

A practical first-article inspection package might include a stack-up confirmation, relevant cross-section data, impedance values and a nonconformance/deviation log. Which items are compulsory versus optional depends on the customer quality plan and quoted scope. This distinction prevents an “all tests included” claim from obscuring the actual verification needed for RF and high-speed digital designs.

Stage 4 — Manufacturing Records and Shipment Documentation

A useful documentation package connects the shipped boards to the approved manufacturing revision and the tests actually performed. Request it explicitly at quotation; the word “certificate” does not describe a complete deliverable.

Dokument Fråga den svarar Scope to state in the RFQ
PCB certificate of conformance Were boards manufactured against the approved drawing and acceptance requirements? Applicable IPC class, revisions and any exceptions
Material source or lot documentation Which Isola construction and material identification were used? Required source records, lot links and reporting granularity
Microsection/first article What dielectric, plating or structural characteristics were measured? Sample plan, measurement locations, results and photos
TDR-rapport What impedance values did the representative coupon show? Target/tolerance, coupon and measurement frequency or method details
RF loss report (when specified) Did the selected RF/channel test structures meet the frequency-dependent loss limit? S-parameter method, fixture/de-embedding and acceptance values
Bare-board electrical test summary Did the tested boards pass continuity/isolation checks? Coverage, test method and traceability required

Highleap's fabrication and quality service can be scoped around the program’s inspection needs. A buyer should also ask about retention of records and the process for communicating deviations. Traceability obligations for automotive, medical or regulated products must be separately defined; citing an IPC class alone does not establish all industry-specific compliance obligations.

Stage 5 — From Low-Loss PCB Fabrication to SMT/PCBA

When the product needs populated boards, assembly planning should begin before bare-board release. Highleap's SMT PCB assembly services och turnkey PCB fabrication and assembly can bring BOM sourcing, placement, reflow, inspection and project-specific functional testing into the same program.

Isola describes I-Tera MT40 as compatible with lead-free assembly and multiple reflow cycles, but that does not imply one generic oven profile is correct for every PCBA. Reflow is established from solder-paste requirements, component thermal limits, PCB mass and populated-board measurement. Bare-board storage and moisture controls should follow the approved material and surface-finish handling requirements; arbitrary pre-bake temperatures can cause solderability or finish issues if applied without validation.

A production handoff should confirm the bare-board revision, BOM/assembly drawing revision, stencils, controlled soldering instructions and available test access. If controlled impedance was measured on the bare PCB, the OEM should still consider package and connector launches, vias and assembled-system transitions in its channel validation. Assembly can affect system behavior even when the bare-board coupon passes.

För RF and microwave PCBA applications, define which results are factory acceptance tests and which are final product-level RF validation performed by the customer or an approved specialist.

Highleap can review the complete I-Tera MT40 build route—from fabricating the approved laminate stack-up through optional PCBA integration. To scope the service accurately, provide Gerber/ODB++ or IPC-2581 files, stack-up and dielectric assumptions, fabrication drawing, controlled-impedance table, copper foil requirements, via construction, IPC class, order quantities and required reports. For assembly, add the BOM, placement data, assembly drawing, programming needs and functional-test procedure.

State whether the project is a new prototype, an approved board moving to volume production, or a supplier transfer. This determines whether the priority is a DFM/first-article plan, a repeat-order control package or a comparison against the old supplier’s verified construction.

Service questions OEM engineers ask

Does I-Tera MT40 need PTFE-style special drilling? Isola states it does not require the special through-hole treatments commonly used for PTFE-based laminates. The actual multilayer geometry and drilling process still require fabrication review.

Can TDR prove the Df and insertion loss of the assembled channel? No. TDR primarily checks impedance. Insertion loss requires a frequency-domain measurement approach suitable for the channel and its acceptance criteria.

Can I order an I-Tera PCB and SMT assembly together? Highleap offers PCB fabrication and PCBA. The material construction, assembly process, testing and documentation should be specified as one approved manufacturing package.
