Customer Supplied PCB Assembly: What the Service Includes
The defining point is the material boundary: the customer supplies the bare PCB, while the assembly manufacturer performs the agreed PCBA production work. Component sourcing may be included or excluded depending on the commercial model, so the quotation should state this explicitly rather than treating “customer supplied” as a universal industry definition.
| Escopo do serviço | Responsabilidade do cliente | Highleap responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| PCB nua | Supply the approved PCB revision and required quantity. | Receive, identify and prepare boards for the agreed assembly process. |
| Componentes | Provide components when the project is also customer-supplied/consigned for materials. | Procure components only when that purchasing scope is included in the quotation. |
| Montagem | Release the required BOM, placement and assembly information. | Perform SMT, through-hole or mixed assembly according to the released data. |
| Inspeção e testes | Define product-specific acceptance or functional requirements where applicable. | Apply the agreed inspection and test process. |
| Entrega | Confirm quantity, packaging and delivery requirements. | Complete the agreed production and shipment process. |
If you need a broader manufacturing scope, see Highleap’s Serviços de montagem de PCB. For projects where the manufacturer manages complete component procurement, review montagem de PCB chave na mão.
When Customer Supplied PCB Assembly Makes Commercial Sense
This model is useful when the customer already has PCB inventory, uses a separate PCB fabrication supplier, holds boards in a regional warehouse, or needs to keep bare-board purchasing under its own procurement system. It can also suit replacement and production programs where the PCB revision is already qualified and only the assembly stage needs to be outsourced.
Do Not Confuse the PCB Supply Model With the Component Supply Model
Supplying bare PCBs does not automatically mean supplying components. A customer can provide the PCB while the manufacturer sources the BOM, or provide both PCB and components for a consigned build. The quotation should therefore identify PCB ownership and component procurement separately.
Preparing Customer-Supplied PCBs for Assembly
Before a board enters the SMT line, the production team needs to know exactly which PCB revision is being assembled, how many boards are available and whether the physical boards match the released manufacturing information. This is especially important when customers ship boards manufactured by another supplier.
- Confirm PCB revision: Match the supplied boards with the approved part number, revision and production documentation.
- Confirm quantity: Check the received quantity against the planned build and identify shortages before scheduling production.
- Review assembly data: Confirm the BOM, centroid/pick-and-place data, assembly drawing and applicable notes.
- Check board condition: Inspect packaging and visible PCB condition before assembly.
- Release the build: Resolve material or documentation discrepancies before production proceeds.
PCB Revision Control Matters More Than the Supplier Name
A customer may send boards from several production lots. If different revisions are mixed, component placement or firmware-related functions can become inconsistent even when the boards look similar. Part number, revision and lot information should therefore be traceable to the production order.
Packaging and Handling Before SMT
Customer-supplied boards should arrive in packaging appropriate to their construction and handling requirements. Moisture-sensitive assemblies, special finishes, exposed contacts and mechanically delicate boards may require project-specific handling instructions. The correct procedure depends on the PCB construction and customer requirements rather than on a generic “customer supplied” rule.
For the required production documentation, see PCB assembly files requirements.
SMT, Through-Hole and Mixed PCB Assembly
Customer supplied PCB assembly describes who supplies the bare board; it does not restrict the assembly technology. The same customer-provided PCB can require surface-mount assembly, through-hole assembly, or a mixed technology process depending on the released design.
SMT Assembly on Customer-Supplied Boards
For SMT production, the board’s fiducials, land patterns, component references and placement coordinates must be consistent with the released data. Any discrepancy between the physical PCB and assembly files should be resolved before programming the production line.
A Highleap fornece Montagem SMT PCB para atender aos requisitos de produção definidos pelo cliente.
Through-Hole Components on Customer-Provided PCBs
Through-hole parts can add mechanical strength or provide interfaces that are not suited to an SMT-only process. Connector orientation, lead condition, solder requirements and any customer-defined selective or manual assembly instructions should be included in the released package.
See conjunto de PCB através do orifício for the corresponding assembly scope.

Incoming PCB Verification and Production Controls
The factory should not treat customer-supplied boards as anonymous incoming material. A controlled receiving process reduces the chance of assembling the wrong PCB revision or discovering a quantity problem after the production line has been prepared.
- Part-number identification: Match the board marking and shipment information to the purchase order or approved project record.
- Revision verification: Confirm that the received PCB corresponds to the released assembly data.
- Conciliação de quantidades: Record the received quantity and identify any shortage before production planning.
- Condição visual: Check for visible damage or handling issues that could affect assembly.
- Consistência da documentação: Resolve BOM, placement and drawing conflicts before production release.
When the customer supplies the PCB, both sides benefit from defining the exact board part number, revision, quantity, packaging requirements and disposition process for discrepancies. This makes the assembly quotation and production handoff much more predictable.
What Happens if Customer-Supplied PCBs Are Short?
If the received quantity is below the planned build quantity, the available boards may not support the full order. The shortage should be identified before the assembly schedule is finalized. Highleap can then coordinate the production plan according to the actual material availability and agreed customer instructions.
What if the PCB Revision Does Not Match the BOM?
The mismatch should be reviewed rather than corrected by assumption. A PCB revision can change footprints, reference designators, component values, solder requirements or electrical functions. Production should use the approved combination of PCB and assembly documentation.
Inspection, Testing and Assembly Quality
Supplying the bare PCB does not reduce the need for assembly quality control. The appropriate inspection and testing scope should be based on the actual board design, component mix, production quantity and customer acceptance requirements.
- Inspeção visual: Check the assembled board for visible workmanship and component placement issues.
- AOI: Automated optical inspection can identify many SMT placement and solder-related defects.
- Teste elétrico: Apply electrical tests where the product and test access support them.
- Teste funcional: Verify the finished assembly against customer-defined functional requirements when a suitable fixture or procedure is available.
- Customer-specific inspection: Apply additional acceptance requirements when they are included in the released production documentation.

Why Functional Testing Can Be Important
A board can pass a visual inspection while still having an electrical or system-level problem. Where the product supports a repeatable test fixture, functional testing can verify the behavior that matters to the customer rather than checking appearance alone.
First Article and Production Verification
For a new build or changed revision, the customer may require a first-article review before full production. The exact approval process should be agreed during quotation and tied to the released documentation.
Highleap also provides Inspeção do primeiro artigo na montagem da placa de circuito impresso. for applicable projects.
Customer Supplied PCB Assembly for Prototype and Production
The customer-supplied PCB model can work for prototypes, pilot builds and recurring production when the material and documentation flow remains stable. The commercial advantage is strongest when the customer already has a reliable source for the bare PCB and wants to consolidate assembly with an experienced PCBA manufacturer.
Prototype and Pilot Builds
For a prototype, the customer may send a limited quantity of boards and ask Highleap to assemble them against the current design package. The first build can reveal practical issues such as missing assembly notes, incorrect placement references or differences between the PCB and BOM. Resolving these issues before volume production reduces downstream disruption.
Recurring Production
For repeat orders, revision control becomes especially important. The customer should identify the approved PCB revision and notify the manufacturer when a new board lot or design revision is introduced. A stable documentation process helps keep repeat builds aligned with the approved product configuration.
For lower-quantity production programs, see montagem de PCB de baixo volume.
Quotation Requirements and Manufacturing Support
A customer-supplied PCB assembly quote should define both the physical board and the assembly workload. PCB dimensions alone are not enough to establish the production requirement.
| Informações sobre cotação | Why Highleap needs it |
|---|---|
| PCB part number and revision | Identifies the exact board configuration to be assembled. |
| Quantidade de PCBs | Defines the available and required production volume. |
| BOM | Defines the component requirement and assembly configuration. |
| Dados de seleção e colocação / centroide | Defines SMT component locations and orientations. |
| desenho de montagem | Clarifies component references, polarity and special instructions. |
| Requisitos de teste | Determines whether electrical or functional testing is required. |
| Customer-supplied material scope | Prevents uncertainty about whether the customer supplies only PCBs or also components. |
| Quantidade de produção | Supports accurate process and pricing evaluation. |
Customer Supplied PCB Assembly vs. Consigned PCB Assembly
These terms can overlap in real-world purchasing language, but the intended scope should be stated precisely. “Customer supplied PCB assembly” may simply describe a build in which the customer supplies the bare boards. “Consigned PCB assembly” more commonly describes a model in which the customer supplies the assembly materials while the manufacturer provides the assembly service. The purchase order and quotation should define the actual material responsibility.
For a build where the customer supplies the assembly materials, review montagem de PCB consignada. For component procurement by Highleap, see sourcing de componentes.
