KB-6164 Fabricante de PCBs para fabricação multicamadas com controle de custos e PCBA

KB-6164 PCB for cost-controlled multilayer fabrication

KB-6164 is Kingboard’s standard-Tg, lead-free-compatible FR-4 laminate used with KB-6064 prepreg. Highleap Electronics manufactures KB-6164 multilayer PCBs for products that need a named material, practical cost control and a documented route from bare board through PCBA.

The material is appropriate only when the board does not need high-Tg, formal anti-CAF, high-CTI or low-loss performance. A good supplier should make those boundaries visible before quotation rather than treating every FR-4 callout as equivalent.

What the buyer is purchasing: not a sheet of KB-6164, but a finished construction—material source, core/prepreg set, copper, pressed thickness, holes, surface finish, electrical test and optional assembly.

Define the Finished-Board Scope

A KB-6164 inquiry may be for bare boards, turnkey PCBA, consigned assembly or a material-qualified repeat build. The quotation should identify where Highleap’s responsibility starts and ends.

Material Facts and Application Limits

Kingboard lists KB-6164 as lead-free-process compatible and standard Tg, with typical Tg 140°C, Td 330°C, total Z-axis expansion of 3.5% and CTI 175 V. Those values position it above a purely conventional legacy laminate for lead-free use, but below the company’s mid- and high-Tg, anti-CAF and high-CTI families.

Where it normally fits

KB-6164 is suitable for many consumer, control, instrumentation and general electronics boards with moderate layer count and conventional holes. It can be used for controlled impedance when the stackup is solved from construction-specific values.

Where to consider an upgrade

  • High layer count, thick boards or repeated rework: compare a high-Tg, lower-CTE grade.
  • Formal CAF requirement: use a published anti-CAF family such as KB-6164F or another approved grade.
  • High CTI or high-voltage insulation requirement: select a material with the required CTI class and validate spacing.
  • Long high-speed channels: compare lower-loss materials.

O high-Tg FR-4 manufacturing guide explains when a thermal upgrade changes finished-board reliability rather than simply adding cost.

Stackup, Drilling and Fabrication

A multilayer KB-6164 board normally combines KB-6164 cores with KB-6064 prepreg. The released stackup should state core thickness, prepreg glass style/resin content, copper by layer, pressed dielectric, finished thickness and impedance targets.

Hole geometry and plating

Standard-Tg material is not a reason to accept aggressive aspect ratios. Highleap reviews finished hole, drill diameter, annular ring, drill-to-copper spacing, desmear and hole-wall copper. Representative microsections can be included for first articles or ongoing lot control.

Copper balance and flatness

Large plane differences across the centerline can increase bow, twist and registration movement. CAM compensation and copper balancing should be part of the stackup release. For heavy copper, use a material and resin-fill review rather than assuming KB-6164 is automatically suitable.

Impedância controlada

Impedance targets should identify the geometry, layer, reference plane and tolerance. Highleap can propose trace dimensions and coupon structures. See the impedance-control PCB guide for the difference between modeled and measured control.

Lead-Free PCBA and Testing

KB-6164 is lead-free-process compatible, but the PCBA’s real exposure still matters. Double-sided reflow, wave soldering and BGA rework add cumulative thermal stress. Moisture handling and profile development should be based on board thickness, copper mass and component limitations.

Highleap can quote SMT, THT, mixed assembly, AOI, X-ray where appropriate, programming and functional testing when the acceptance method is defined. A first-article review is especially useful for new BOMs or connector-heavy boards. The PCBA first-article inspection guide outlines what should be checked before volume release.

Release step Propósito
100% bare-board electrical test Detects opens and shorts before assembly
AOI Checks component presence, polarity and visible solder conditions
X-ray when applicable Reviews hidden BGA/QFN or selected through-hole joints
Programação Loads approved firmware with revision control
Teste funcional Verifies product behavior using customer-defined method and limits

Equivalent Control, Repeat Supply and Cost

Two standard-Tg FR-4 grades are not automatically equivalent. A controlled substitution compares Tg by method, Td, Z-axis expansion, T260/T288, resin flow, glass availability, CTI, certificates and the approved manufacturing source.

Repeat orders need a locked construction

The purchase order should reference the approved drawing and stackup revision. Material substitutions, prepreg changes and copper changes should require written approval. Prototype and production panel sizes may differ, but the finished electrical and mechanical requirements must remain correlated.

O que impulsiona o custo

Cost is influenced by panel utilization, layers, thickness, copper, drill count, minimum features, surface finish, impedance coupons, inspection and assembly scope. Material price is only one line item. Better DFM often saves more than an undocumented laminate substitution.

Application examples that fit the material class

Typical candidate products include control panels, power-supply control boards, small industrial interfaces, consumer devices and moderate-density communication products that use conventional plated holes and ordinary lead-free assembly. These examples are not automatic approvals. A thick eight-layer board with very small holes can be riskier than a thin ten-layer board with generous geometry.

How Highleap separates standard and optional services

The bare-board quote should identify material, layer count, copper, finish, electrical test and delivery basis. Optional items—impedance reporting, microsections, certificates, expedited material sourcing, first-article documents, X-ray, programming or functional fixtures—should be listed separately. This improves conversion because the buyer can compare a base manufacturing price with the additional controls required by the end customer.

DFM feedback that can reduce total cost

Highleap may propose changes to panel-friendly dimensions, drill families, annular rings, copper thieving, solder-mask dams or component orientation. The purpose is not to alter the product without approval; it is to show which features drive yield or setup cost. A useful DFM report ranks issues as mandatory, recommended or informational so procurement can see which changes affect quotation validity.

What happens after the quotation is accepted

  1. Commercial and technical revisions are frozen.
  2. Fabrication data and BOM are reviewed for conflicts.
  3. The stackup, material source and inspection plan are released.
  4. A first article or pilot build is produced when required.
  5. Customer feedback is incorporated before volume release.
  6. Repeat orders reference the approved revision and change-control rules.

This process creates a conversion path from incomplete inquiry to reliable controlled production instead of treating the quote form as the end of the page.

RFQ Checklist and Highleap Deliverables

  • Tamanho e quantidade do tabuleiro
  • Layer count and thickness
  • Cobre por camada
  • Linha/espaço mínimo
  • O menor furo finalizado
  • O acabamento da superfície
  • Alvos de impedância
  • Required material/equivalent rule
  • BOM and assembly files
  • Test and documentation scope

An initial quote can start without a schematic. Final manufacture requires complete fabrication data; final PCBA requires the released BOM, placement data and assembly drawing.

Highleap’s quotation should clearly identify whether it includes material certificates, microsections, impedance reports, first-article documents, programming, functional fixtures or packaging. This prevents optional quality work from being assumed after the order is placed.

How buyers can compare supplier quotations fairly

Two quotations are comparable only when they include the same material rule, copper, surface finish, electrical test, impedance evidence, certificates, PCBA scope and delivery terms. One supplier may appear cheaper because microsections, programming or functional testing are excluded. Highleap’s quotation should separate included and optional items so the buyer can compare scope rather than headline price.

Lead time should also distinguish engineering review, material procurement, fabrication, assembly and customer approval. For a new product, the fastest reliable path is often a controlled pilot followed by volume release—not skipping the first-article stage.
