Expedited PCB Assembly: Lead Times, Readiness and Cost
Highleap Electronics offers expedited PCB assembly for projects where the delivery date is the main constraint: a missed demo, a respin after a failed validation, a customer sample with a fixed shipping date, or a line-down replacement. Simple builds with ready materials can often be assembled in 5 to 7 days and complex builds in 7 to 10 days, and the assembly step alone can be scheduled in 24 to 72 hours when PCBs and components are already in hand.
Those numbers only hold when the materials are ready. Expedited assembly does not speed up a component that is out of stock or a PCB that has not been fabricated yet. This page explains what sets the critical path on a fast build, how to choose which part of the schedule to compress, and what to send so the clock starts on the day you order.

EXPEDITED PCB ASSEMBLY
Working Against a Fixed Date?
Send your files with the date the boards must arrive. We check part availability first and confirm a realistic ship date with the quote.
Request an Expedited PCB Assembly Quote →Where Expedited PCB Assembly Time Actually Goes
An assembled board passes through four stages, and only one of them is the assembly line. Buyers who compare suppliers by the assembly turn time alone often find that the delivered date depends on everything around it.
| Stage | What determines its length | Can it be compressed? |
|---|---|---|
| Data review and questions | Completeness of Gerber, BOM and centroid data, speed of your answers | Yes, mostly on the customer side: complete data removes the question loop |
| Component procurement | Distributor stock, allocation, shipping from the stocking location | Only if stock exists somewhere; expedited sourcing costs more |
| PCB fabrication | Layer count, lamination cycles, HDI, special laminates, surface finish | Partly; sequential lamination and special materials limit it |
| Assembly, inspection and test | Setup, SMT and THT content, special processes, test development | Yes, with priority scheduling and extra shifts |
In most expedited projects the bottleneck is component procurement, not assembly. One constrained IC can push delivery out by weeks while the rest of the kit waits. That is why our expedited quotation starts with a BOM availability check and reports the longest-lead line before a ship date is promised.
Expedited PCB Assembly Lead Time by Scope
Lead time depends on what Highleap is responsible for. The figures below assume complete data and available components; our PCB assembly lead time guide breaks down each stage in more detail.
| Order scope | Starting point | Typical expedited timing |
|---|---|---|
| Assembly only | PCBs and a complete component kit arrive at Highleap | 24 to 72 hours for assembly, depending on complexity |
| Simple turnkey build | Standard FR-4 board, stocked parts, mostly SMT | Often 5 to 7 days |
| Complex turnkey build | Higher layer count, BGAs, mixed SMT/THT, extra inspection | Often 7 to 10 days |
| Build with a constrained part | Any line on allocation or with factory lead time | Set by that part; we report options before quoting a date |
Which Processes Add Time That Cannot Be Rushed?
Some steps have fixed durations. Underfill and conformal coating each add around half a day to a day because the material must cure, and potting typically adds one to two days. Through-hole content commonly adds half a day to two days after reflow. A new functional test that must be developed from scratch can take one to two weeks, so for a fast build it is usually better to agree on a simple power-on check and run full functional testing on your side.
How to Shorten the Critical Path Before You Order
The most effective schedule savings happen in the request itself. On rush builds we see the same delays repeatedly, and each one is avoidable:
- Approve alternates in advance. List acceptable alternates for passives and common ICs in the BOM. A shortage on a 0402 capacitor should not wait for an email reply.
- Consign the hard parts. If you hold the scarce IC, ship it with the order and let us buy the rest. This partial turnkey approach often removes the longest line from the schedule.
- Keep the board standard where possible. FR-4, standard thickness and a common surface finish fabricate faster than special laminates or sequential lamination. If a respin only changes routing, keep the stackup.
- Send matching files. Gerber, BOM and centroid data from the same revision, with polarity marked. Mismatched revisions are the most common reason a fast job pauses at the review stage.
- Name one decision maker. Engineering questions need an answer within hours on a rush build. Give us a contact who can approve a substitution or a DFM change.
- Split the delivery. If you need 5 boards next week and 50 later, say so. A partial shipment can meet the urgent need without rushing the whole lot.
For combined fabrication and assembly, ordering both from one supplier removes the shipping and receiving step between two factories. When the bare board is the long item, see our quick turn PCB fabrication options.

What Expedited PCB Assembly Should Not Skip
An expedited build that arrives on time but has to be reworked is not fast. Compress waiting time, not verification. These steps stay in every expedited job:
DFM and DFA Review
A short review before procurement catches pad and stencil issues, missing fiducials, and components too close to the board edge. Finding them after reflow costs more time than the review. Our expedited quotes include DFM analysis with a report of findings.
First-Article Check
The first board off the line is checked for part values, polarity and orientation before the remaining boards are placed. On a rush job, a single reversed part repeated across the lot is the most expensive error possible. See how we handle first article inspection.
Inspection Matched to the Package Types
AOI covers visible joints. Boards with BGAs, LGAs or bottom-terminated parts also need X-ray inspection, because a bridged ball cannot be seen from above. Flying probe testing provides electrical verification without waiting for a fixture.
Moisture-Sensitive Device Handling
Rushed kits often include opened reels of moisture-sensitive ICs. Parts beyond their floor life must be baked before reflow, which adds hours. Ship consigned MSL parts sealed with their humidity indicator card to avoid this step.
What Expedited PCB Assembly Costs and Why
Expedited assembly pricing is higher because the factory gives up efficiency to gain time. The premium comes from priority scheduling that moves other work, overtime shifts, expedited component purchasing (broker or premium-freight costs where a part must come from a distant stocking location) and shorter internal queues. Small rush lots also absorb the full setup cost of stencils and machine programs.
A practical approach is to expedite only the quantity you need urgently. Building a few boards on an expedited schedule and the remaining quantity on standard lead time usually costs less than rushing the full order. For details on how assembly pricing is built, see our PCB assembly cost breakdown.
Expedited PCB Assembly FAQ
When does the expedited lead time start?
From the point when the data is complete and the order is confirmed, and for turnkey jobs when components are available. Open engineering questions or a missing part hold the clock, which is why we report them in the quotation.
Can you deliver in 24 hours?
Assembly can be scheduled within 24 to 72 hours when bare PCBs and a complete kit are already at Highleap and the board is suitable for a fast setup. A full turnkey order including fabrication and component purchasing takes longer.
Do expedited boards get the same inspection as standard orders?
Yes. The schedule is compressed by removing waiting time, not by removing AOI, X-ray where required, or first-article checks.
What is the minimum quantity for an expedited build?
An expedited build can cover a single prototype quantity or a small batch. Our standard minimum for assembly orders is 5 pieces.
Can an expedited build include through-hole parts and conformal coating?
Yes, but each adds process and cure time. Tell us in the request so the quoted date includes them.
