The standard abbreviation of manufacturing is Mfg. (also written mfg or MFG). The closely related word manufacturer is abbreviated Mfr. (or mfr / MFR), and manufactured is sometimes shortened to Mfd. These three short forms appear constantly on engineering drawings, bills of materials, purchase orders, and product labels. This page gives you the exact short forms, when each one applies, and a working glossary of the manufacturing and PCB acronyms that surround them — so a spec sheet stops looking like alphabet soup.

The short version

  • Manufacturing → Mfg. (process of making goods)
  • Manufacturer → Mfr. (the company that makes them)
  • Manufactured → Mfd. (already made; e.g. “Mfd. date”)

What Is the Abbreviation of Manufacturing? (Mfg, Mfr, Mfd)

English shortens “manufacturing” and its relatives by dropping the middle letters and keeping the first letter plus a few consonants. The forms below are the ones recognised in technical writing, supply-chain documents, and dictionaries.

Word Common abbreviation Example in use
Manufacturing Mfg. / mfg / MFG “Mfg. process,” “Smith Mfg. Co.”
Manufacturer Mfr. / mfr / MFR “Mfr. part number (MPN)”
Manufactured Mfd. / mfd “Mfd. date: 2026-04”
Manufacturing (alt.) Mftg / Mfctr Less common, seen in older docs

A note on style

“Mfg.” with a period is the formal written form; “mfg” without a period and “MFG” in all caps are both widely accepted in tables, labels, and database fields where space is tight. In a company name the abbreviation is usually capitalised — “Acme Mfg.” — because it stands in for a proper noun. None of these are pluralised differently; “Mfrs.” simply means manufacturers.

Mfg vs Mfr: Why the Difference Matters on a BOM

On a single electronics project, the words “manufacturing” and “manufacturer” appear in dozens of places, and they mean different things. Confusing them creates ordering errors:

  • MPN (Manufacturer Part Number) identifies the exact part as the maker catalogs it — not your internal number. Mixing up “Mfr. P/N” with your own “Internal P/N” leads to the wrong component being bought.
  • Mfg. date vs. expiry/use-by matters for moisture-sensitive devices and date-coded components, where shelf life is measured from the manufacturing date.
  • “Mfg. process notes” on a drawing tell the factory how to build, while the Mfr. field on the BOM tells procurement who made each part.

In short: Mfg. is about the activity and the process; Mfr. is about the company and the part’s pedigree. Keeping them straight keeps the quote, the order, and the build aligned.

Where Manufacturing Abbreviations Appear in a PCB Project

Reading a real project front to back, the abbreviations land in predictable places:

  1. RFQ stage: you send a BOM listing each Mfr. and MPN; the EMS replies with a quote and MOQ.
  2. Design review: DFM, DFA, and DFT checks are run before the Mfg. process is locked.
  3. Fabrication: the bare PCB is built; surface finish (HASL, ENIG, OSP) is specified.
  4. Assembly: SMT and THT lines populate the board into a PCBA/PCA.
  5. Quality: AOI, AXI, ICT, and FCT verify it; FAI signs off the first build; an Mfd. date and serial number complete traceability.

Common Manufacturing Abbreviation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mfg. vs. Mfr.: one is the process (manufacturing), the other is the company (manufacturer). On a BOM you want the Mfr.
  • PCB vs. PCBA: a PCB is the empty board; a PCBA has components soldered on. Quoting one when you mean the other changes the price dramatically.
  • MPN vs. internal P/N: always order against the manufacturer part number, not just your internal code.
  • “Mfd” the abbreviation vs. “mfd” the old capacitance unit: in vintage schematics “mfd” sometimes meant microfarad — context tells you which.

Reading a Highleap PCB Manufacturing Quote and BOM

Highleap Electronics is a China-based PCB and PCBA manufacturer, so most of the abbreviations above appear directly on the documents we exchange with customers. When you submit a project, the quote and review use this same shorthand:

  • PCB fabrication for the bare board, with surface finish and stackup called out by their standard abbreviations.
  • Components sourcing matched to the Mfr. and MPN on your BOM, with alternates flagged when a part is at risk.
  • PCB assembly (SMT/THT) turning the PCB into a finished PCBA.
  • DFM and inspection steps (AOI, FCT, FAI) documented so the build is traceable.

If a line on a quote isn’t clear, our engineers spell it out rather than leaving you to guess — clarity in the paperwork prevents the wrong part or the wrong process being ordered.

Manufacturing Abbreviation FAQ (Mfg, Mfr, Mfd)

What is the abbreviation for manufacturing?

“Mfg.” (also written mfg or MFG). It stands for the process of making goods and appears in company names and process notes.

What is the abbreviation for manufacturer?

“Mfr.” (or mfr / MFR). On a bill of materials, the “Mfr.” column names the company that makes each part, paired with its MPN.

Is it “Mfg” or “Mfr” on a part number?

It’s “Mfr.” — a Manufacturer Part Number (MPN). “Mfg.” refers to the manufacturing process, not the maker, so it would be the wrong label for a part number field.

What does “Mfd. date” mean?

Manufactured date — the date the item was made. It matters for shelf-life and moisture-sensitive components whose handling clock starts at manufacture.

Why are abbreviations like DFM and BOM used so heavily?

They keep dense engineering and procurement documents readable and standard across suppliers worldwide, so a BOM or drawing means the same thing to every factory.

Does “MFG” in all caps mean something different from “Mfg.”?

No. Capitalisation and the period are stylistic. “Mfg.”, “mfg”, and “MFG” all mean manufacturing; pick one and use it consistently within a document.

What’s the difference between OEM and ODM?

An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) builds a product to the buyer’s design, while an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) both designs and builds it, with the buyer branding the result. The distinction affects who owns the design and who is responsible for engineering changes.

Is “PCBA” the same as “PCA”?

In practice yes — both mean an assembled board (the bare PCB plus its soldered components). “PCBA” (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) is the more common term; “PCA” (Printed Circuit Assembly) appears in some companies’ and standards’ documentation as a synonym.

What is the abbreviation for “manufacturing date”?

It is usually written Mfg. date or Mfd., and on labels you’ll also see “MFG DATE.” All mean the date the item was made — the point from which shelf life and moisture-sensitivity handling are measured for date-coded components.
