Before you specify the stackup

A material name is not yet a material specification.

“FR-4,” “low-loss,” “Rogers” and “polyimide” describe broad classes or manufacturers—not necessarily an orderable laminate. One product family may contain different dielectric grades, copper finishes, thicknesses and matching prepregs. Two materials with similar dielectric constants can still behave differently in a high-speed channel, a multilayer lamination cycle or lead-free assembly.

This page combines practical selection criteria with a searchable, manufacturer-referenced index. For every record, we distinguish its exact displayed grade, product series, material form and source-link specificity. Missing Tg, Dk or Df values are deliberately left blank rather than estimated.

SOURCE POLICY: This material index distinguishes (1) source-listed model, (2) catalog destination, (3) independently opened model page, and (4) unverified datasheet. A catalog link is not evidence that a grade-level datasheet exists, and commercial availability is not guaranteed. Unverified or timed-out PDFs are not offered as live downloads.

PCB Material Finder: Search by Brand, Grade & Properties

Search by grade or series. Combine filters—for example, Rogers + RF / microwave or all brands + high Tg. Results update immediately from the same downloadable dataset.

Preparing material index…
ManufacturerGrade / productClassFormTg °CDk / DfOfficial references

In the results, “Opened model page” identifies an individually inspected manufacturer page. “Official catalog” is broader and may not contain a grade-level PDF. A blank source means there is no currently checked public link for that brand. Dk/Df values require frequency/method context.

Understand the material landscape

Types of PCB Materials for Fabrication and Assembly

A good material database separates a dielectric technology from the way the material is supplied. For example, polyimide may describe a rigid high-temperature laminate, a flexible film or a prepreg, while a bonded microwave stackup may require an entirely different bonding system from its core.

01

General FR-4

Epoxy-glass laminates are common for industrial controls, consumer electronics and cost-sensitive multilayer boards. FR-4 alone is not a manufacturer grade, and thermal properties vary.

02

High-Tg FR-4

Often chosen for complex multilayer assemblies and elevated reflow exposure. Our database uses published Tg ≥ 170°C as an explicit filtering convention, not an industry-wide mandatory threshold.

03

High-speed / low-loss

Engineered dielectrics help manage insertion loss in servers, switches, optical networking and high-speed digital backplanes. Copper roughness and construction remain important.

04

RF / microwave

PTFE composites, ceramic-filled hydrocarbon laminates and specialty substrates are selected with frequency-specific Dk/Df, thickness tolerance and fabrication processes in mind.

05

Halogen-free systems

A composition or material-system attribute, not necessarily a speed or Tg category. Verify the actual declaration, flame-retardant standard and data-sheet revision.

06

Rigid-flex & flexible

Flexible copper-clad laminates, adhesive layers, coverlays and resin-coated flexible copper must be indexed separately; bend radius and copper type strongly affect reliability.

07

Polyimide

High-temperature rigid laminate systems and flexible polyimide constructions serve different use cases despite sharing a broad polymer name.

08

IMS / metal-core

Insulated metal substrates combine circuit copper, a thermally managed dielectric and a metal base. Thermal conductivity alone does not specify dielectric strength or thermal resistance.

09

Prepreg & bondply

These materials join multilayer structures. They are not automatically interchangeable with finished copper-clad laminates even when the resin chemistry is related.

Also in the material landscape: ceramics and IC package substrates

Alumina (Al₂O₃), aluminum nitride (AlN), silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), DBC and AMB structures are important for high-power and thermal designs. ABF build-up films and BT resins serve packaging applications. Those terms describe materials or construction methods, not yet qualified orderable grades. They are discussed here, but the searchable grade table does not invent commercial ceramic, ABF or BT model numbers without a traceable manufacturer record.

Application-driven selection

How to Choose PCB Materials for Manufacturing

Material choice is best treated as an engineering decision with measurable inputs. “Lowest Df,” “highest Tg,” or the best-known brand rarely determines the entire stackup by itself.

Start with the product environment

Set the operating frequency, temperature profile, required lifetime, assembly cycles, layer count, board outline and cost/lead-time constraints.

Translate needs into properties

Define permissible loss, Dk tolerance, thermal expansion, Tg/Td, moisture absorption, thickness availability and flame/composition requirements.

Approve the exact construction

Confirm copper type, dielectric thickness, compatible prepreg or bondply, datasheet revision, PCB-process readiness and customer substitution permissions.

High-speed digital versus RF design

High-speed digital materials are often evaluated against an insertion-loss budget for a real routed channel. At higher data rates, copper foil roughness, resin and glass distribution, impedance geometry and via losses may be as influential as the published dielectric dissipation factor. Microwave designs also need frequency-specific dielectric performance, dimensional stability, antenna or transmission-line geometry and material fabrication guidance. A grade with favorable 10 GHz numbers is not guaranteed to produce lower system loss at every frequency.

Lead-free assembly is not simply a Tg comparison

Glass-transition temperature indicates a change in polymer behavior, whereas decomposition temperature, expansion before/after Tg, moisture response and repeated soldering exposure address different reliability mechanisms. One laminate with Tg 180°C may not be superior in every assembly process to another with a lower Tg; the complete thermal reliability dataset and the actual manufacturing profile matter.

Rigid-flex, thermal and hybrid constructions

Rigid-flex designs require scrutiny of adhesive systems, copper fatigue, coverlay geometry and bend service. Insulated-metal-substrate designs require electrical isolation alongside thermal performance. RF hybrid boards mixing PTFE and FR-4 require explicit review of lamination cycles, interlayer bonding, drilling, hole-wall conditioning and coefficient-of-expansion mismatch. Always check the fabricator's proven process for the exact materials and thicknesses.

Read specifications correctly

PCB Material Datasheet Parameters: Dk, Df, Tg and Td

ParameterWhat it tells youImportant condition to capture
Dk / εrRelative dielectric permittivity affects propagation delay and controlled impedance.Test frequency, method, axis, thickness, conditioning, glass/copper construction; distinguish design Dk from process Dk.
Df / tan δDielectric loss factor used when evaluating signal attenuation.Frequency, method and sample conditioning; do not compare unlike test conditions as one ranking.
TgGlass-transition temperature reported for applicable polymer systems.DSC, DMA or TMA method and report convention. Different methods may produce different numeric values.
TdThermal decomposition temperature, commonly reported at a defined weight-loss point.TGA criterion (for example 5% weight loss) and atmosphere.
CTE / Z expansionDimensional change, often critical for plated-through-hole reliability.Axis, temperature interval, below/above Tg, total Z expansion.
Thermal conductivityAbility to transfer heat, critical to IMS and ceramic substrate selection.Through-plane versus in-plane method, temperature and dielectric thickness.
Copper and dielectric buildAffects etching, impedance, insertion loss and manufacturability.Foil weight/roughness, core thickness, reinforcement and available prepreg/bondply.

Important filtering rule: “High Tg” in the finder means a recorded manufacturer-published numeric Tg of at least 170°C. This threshold is declared by this library for practical discovery. Records without a published numeric Tg are excluded, even if the marketing description contains “high Tg.” Measurement methods are shown where recorded; cross-method comparisons require care.

This static index is the same model inventory used by the selector. Product-link specificity is available in the interactive results and CSV. Every grade remains subject to current availability and supplier confirmation.

Manufacturer landscape

Brand and series coverage

Use the brand menu above to see every eligible record from that manufacturer in this published dataset. We maintain the following distinctions rather than treating a corporate name as proof of particular grade availability.

Rogers, AGC and specialty RF suppliers

The index separates Rogers RO3000, RO4000, RT/duroid, TMM, AD, DiClad/CuClad and bonding-material records. AGC pages document selected former Taconic-associated grades. Crane's Polyflon names are labeled as product families, not orderable individual SKUs.

Isola, Ventec and Arlon EMD

Isola laminate/prepreg grades, Ventec rigid/high-speed/thermal systems and Arlon EMD high-temperature polyimides appear as distinct manufacturers. Legacy Arlon RF trade names must not be mistaken for today's Arlon EMD materials.

Kingboard, Shengyi and TUC

These suppliers cover standard FR-4, high-Tg, halogen-free and low-loss product lines. Grade suffixes are preserved. For Shengyi, product pages document Synamic 6/8 grades and their thermal and dielectric conditions.

Panasonic and DuPont

Panasonic MEGTRON naming differentiates R-57xx laminate from R-56xx prepreg references; selected Felios flexible products are also included. DuPont's Pyralux families are tracked separately until exact constructions can be cataloged.

ITEQ, EMC, Doosan and Nan Ya Plastics

New manufacturer-backed model references add additional high-Tg epoxy, ultralow-loss high-speed and halogen-free laminates. ITEQ grade pages and EMC material tables include Tg conditions; Doosan offers grade-level property pages; Nan Ya provides official manufacturer-hosted PDFs. A source link is not a guarantee of active production.

Current coverage is intentionally not global completeness. The database now includes ITEQ, EMC (Elite Material), Doosan Electronics and Nan Ya Plastics as well. Additional manufacturers, ceramic producers and exact ordering configurations still require source-by-source review.

Transparency and quality control

How this index is verified—and its limits

Highleap's library does not create a “complete model” merely from a family name. We track separate fields for the brand, stated grade, series, category, form, official product URL, official datasheet URL, Tg/Td, Dk/Df, methods and test frequency when found.

  • Source identity: manufacturer-listed names are linked to manufacturer catalogs where those pages were inspected; most individual-grade TDS URLs have not passed independent live verification.
  • Not assumed: a manufacturer listing does not verify active production, regional stock, a certified substitution, the latest document revision or test values that have not been recorded.
  • Families are separate: entries like CuFlon or Pyralux AP are excluded from the standard exact-model count and appear only when “Include product families” is enabled.
  • Measurement hygiene: blank parameters stay blank. Published Tg and Dk/Df are displayed as nominal references, not guaranteed design constants.
  • Maintenance: this library has a review date and should be rechecked whenever a manufacturer changes product names, datasheets, ownership, specifications or availability.

Reference sources include Rogers, Isola, Ventec, Kingboard, Shengyi, TUC and Arlon EMD.

PCB Fabrication & Assembly RFQ: Material Details to Provide

A product name alone leaves critical sourcing and fabrication details undecided. Before requesting a build, specify the complete manufacturer grade and suffix, dielectric stackup, core and prepreg construction, controlled impedance, layer count, finished thickness, copper weights and foil type, via/backdrill requirements, lead-free assembly profile, finish, acceptance standard, certification requirements, order volume and schedule. If an equivalent material is allowed, document who approves it and the limits it must meet.

For example, “Rogers board” can refer to radically different laminate and bonding systems. Likewise, a Panasonic MEGTRON core reference cannot automatically substitute for a related prepreg product. An engineer should approve changes using the complete electrical, thermal and mechanical requirements—not one attractive Dk number.

Frequently asked questions

PCB material questions, answered

Are all Rogers PCB laminate models included?

No worldwide-completeness claim is made. Selecting Rogers returns every Rogers record in the current index—including distinct grade records and separately labeled family records by default. Uncheck “Include product families” to see only individual grade references. More grades should be imported only after confirming the manufacturer source and exact designation.

Does the High Tg filter include every high-temperature product?

It includes every indexed specific-grade entry with a recorded manufacturer-published numeric Tg ≥ 170°C. Tg can be reported by DSC, DMA or TMA, and methods are not interchangeable; records retain the stated method. Grades with no confirmed numeric Tg are excluded, even if marketing literature calls them “high Tg”. Some ceramics and thermoplastics may not have a directly comparable Tg.

What is the difference between a model and a product family?

A model or grade is a manufacturer designation such as RO4350B or KB-3200G. A product family (for example Pyralux AP) may cover many orderable constructions; a family name alone may not identify the required copper/thickness/adhesive combination.

Can Dk or Df values be directly compared between brands?

Only with matching or appropriately normalized methods, frequency, conditioning and material construction. Our index displays a test frequency when recorded; missing conditions mean the official technical datasheet must be consulted before comparison.

Does “manufacturer-listed” mean a material can be purchased now?

No. The published record establishes an official source for a model designation or family, not active commercial production, local stock, MOQ, current lead time or finished-board manufacturing approval. These must be confirmed during sourcing.

Can Highleap recommend an equivalent laminate?

An alternative requires technical review of the controlled stackup, dielectric performance, copper construction, thermal reliability, manufacturing compatibility and the design owner's approval. Dk alone is insufficient.
