- HDI for fine-pitch density: Processors, memory and secure devices can require HDI PCB structures for BGA escape routing. HDI should be used where the layout requires it rather than specified generically for all POS products.
- Display and touch integration: FPC connector position, backlight power and touch control should be tied to the exact module in the released display PCB design.
- Payment-interface separation: Contact-card, NFC and other interface electronics should be routed and grounded according to the OEM architecture, with critical regions protected from unapproved layout edits.
- Mechanical connector support: USB-C, dock, card-reader and battery connectors may experience repeated force and should be supported by the PCB and enclosure load path.
- Controlled component identity: Secure processors, memory, radio modules and payment-interface ICs should use approved MPNs and customer-defined substitution rules.
- Traceable production configuration: PCB revision, BOM revision, programmed image and test procedure should all identify the same release.
Does every handheld POS terminal need HDI?
No. HDI is appropriate when the package pitch, routing density or board size demands it. A conventional multilayer board can be preferable if it meets the design without unnecessary sequential lamination.
Why is module revision control important in POS products?
A footprint-compatible radio or payment-interface module can still change firmware behavior, supported functions or certification impact. The exact approved revision should therefore be defined.
2. Contactless RF, Display and Battery Integration in Handheld POS PCBAs
POS terminals place contactless RF electronics close to a display, battery, processor and wireless radios. The PCB and mechanical environment should preserve the validated separation, grounding and antenna behavior.
- Contactless RF path: Where the board contains RF routes or an NFC interface, stack-up and shielding controls should follow the released RF communication PCB architecture.
- Battery management: Rechargeable portable terminals need controlled charging and protection. The relevant board-level considerations are similar to those in a battery management PCB for current paths, sensing and thermal behavior.
- Display FPC access: The assembly drawing should define connector contact side, cable orientation and the stage at which the display is installed.
- Charging and operating mode: Define whether the terminal is tested while charging, on battery, on dock power or in more than one state.
- Shield and enclosure effects: Metal shields, display frames and battery position can affect RF behavior and should remain linked to the validated mechanical revision.
These controls allow the EMS supplier to reproduce the approved electronics without making assumptions about security or certification that belong to the OEM product program.
3. Controlled Sourcing, Programming and Inspection for POS Terminal PCBA Production
Payment-related electronics are especially sensitive to configuration errors. Sourcing, programming and inspection records should therefore be linked to the released work order rather than treated as independent production steps.

Should secure or payment-related components allow automatic alternates?

What should be frozen before a POS pilot build?
At minimum, PCB data, BOM, approved alternates, display/payment modules, firmware, assembly drawings and board-level test criteria should be synchronized before the pilot lot is released.
